APA - The American Poolplayers Association was founded by professional pool players Larry Hubbart and Terry Bell in 1981. APA has been franchising since 1982. The APA performs a system of franchised-based local amateur leagues of pool competition, which includes both eight-ball and nine-ball, with a unified APA set of rules. Its headquarters is based in Missouri, US.

The franchisor offers to persons, partners, corporations or LLC's a franchise to operate a pool league within an allocated geographic territory. Franchisee designated formats needs to be followed by a franchisee to operate pool leagues. The basic formats for league play are the games of eight-balls and nine-balls with matches between five-person teams. By the end of 2006, APA had 284 units.

Prior to opening a franchise business, franchisee is required to attend and complete an initial training program for new franchisees. It is mandatory for a franchisee or manager (if they are a corporation) or LLC or partnership to permanently reside in the assigned territory. The franchisee's office can be allocated anywhere within the territory. The franchisor is not allowed to further license any other person to operate a pool league using their trademarks within the franchisee's assigned territory.

The franchise contract is valid for a 2 year conditional term. Only if the franchisee is able to meet the specified requirements, the franchise agreement can be extended for a 5 year regular term. $250 is the fee for extension of the conditional term.

It is required that the franchisee be the Manager. If there is a corporation or LLC (limited liability company), the greater part owner or majority proprietor must be designated the manager.
