Wisdom Teeth Removal – The Process and Complications

Wisdom Teeth Removal The Process and Complications

Wisdom tooth is one of the third molars in human beings who normally have up to four wisdom teeth. They appear within the age group of 18 to 25 and affect the growth of the other teeth and hence to be extracted for better growth of other teeth.

A wisdom tooth which is not grown properly and affecting the growth of the other teeth is said to be impacted. Each wisdom tooth grows in its own unique way impacting the bone, gum and other tissues in the mouth. There are different types of impaction depending on the way the wisdom tooth has affected the other bones. When a wisdom tooth is impacted or is in the danger of impaction, then it is wise to adopt wisdom tooth removal.

Wisdom tooth removal consists of five steps. The removal is required only when the wisdom tooth start affecting the other parts like tongue and inside of the mouth. First step in the removal process is to locate the impacted tooth and then the soft tissue is cut open. Then the tooth crown is revealed after removing the bone. The wisdom tooth is then cut and removed as a whole or in pieces. Once the removal is complete the tissue is sutured back.

The wisdom tooth removal is normally done by a qualified dental surgeon under anesthesia in the hospital. The post operation process is not very difficult. The bleeding is normal and for preventing the same, gauze pads are used. These pads are to be changed periodically as they get soaked in blood. The bleeding should normally stop in 24 hours.

Doctors normally suggest some pain killers to ease the pain. The mouth will be numb after the surgery and ensure that you don't bite your tongue or lips. While sleeping use a pillow to pop up your head. Limit your diet to soft liquid food and avoid the use of straws in the initial stages. The diet can be enriched with the other foods as the days go by.
