. Baden translates into bath in German, so its clear to everybody that Baden Baden is no doubt the ultimate spa-city in the world! Just joking, obviously, yet in every joke you will find a grain of truth. This place is a spa-tourists nirvana.The natural water sources in the area are to blame for the current importance of this town. They have been famous for hundreds and hundreds of years, due to the fact that even the Romans, in a time when the glorious Roman Empire was at the peak of its power, went there to take baths. Romans were known for the way they emphasized the importance of hygiene. They took baths very often, and even their slaves were doing it. Ordinary Romans and nobles gathered at the communal spas to wash away the burden of daily hassle. Todays Baden Baden was a really important place to visit for aristocratic Romans, because of the various beautiful springs that surrounded the area. They were visiting the place by the hundreds, trying to heal their arthritic illnesses. Even the Caesar Caracalla went there to ease his back pains. At that point in history, the place was given the name Aurelia Aquensis, which actually means The Waters of Aurelius.
It was entitled Baden for the first time after the Roman Empire was dissolved, at the rise of the Middle Ages. In the 12th century it became the capital of the principality of Baden, and it stayed like this up to the 18th century. But in that interval, almost none of the people took baths, and so, as a result, nobody knew Baden as a cool destination to bathe and unwind. Cant even imagine what the world was like back then, lets just be glad its over.
Anyhow, in the early years of the 19th century, Baden was rediscovered as what it really is: a spa-city. Everyone noticed this fact when a Prussian queen went there to repose and make her health problems go away.
From that moment on, they citys reputation increased constantly, and these days it is known as quite a distinctive destination for tourists who want to see a great little city in a nice location, meet great people and use natures power to become healthier.
The city has a populace of approximately 60000 inhabitants, and it has all you need to feel good and relax. Guests can do almost everything there: golf, tennis and horse racing are the most popular activities of the county, so there are tons of tennis courts and golf courts.
The surrounding area is excellent for outside activities like hiking, climbing and, in the winter, skiing.
There are many interesting places to see in this small, but lovely town: the courthouse, the casino, Festspielhaus, Theater and Kurhaus (the cultural and artistic attractions of the city), fascinating churches and medieval castles, nice parks and gardens. Sure, Baden Baden seems like a town in Fairy Tale Land, but the truth is that its real and its waiting for you!
