Agha Bozorg Mosque is a late 18th century monument located in Kashan. The credit for building this grand structure goes to Ustad Haj Sa'ban-ali. There is also a madrasah (theological school) inside this complex. The reason for building this mosque in the center of Kashan was for offering prayers and for holding teaching and preaching sessions given by Molla Mahdi Nargahi II, who was also known as Agha Bozorg.
Layout of the Mosque
There are two large eyvans in Agha Bozorg Mosque which you can see during your trip to Iran. One of the eyvans is strategically located facing the mihrab while the other one is near the entrance. A fountain and a garden are situated in the middle of the courtyard. Arcades surround the courtyard.
Share: There are two minarets and a dome on the eyvan facing the mihrab. The eyvans and the arcades are colored in red, blue and yellow with the ground being made up of bricks. Studies have pointed to the fact that Ustad Ali Maryam used this mosque as a base to become a great architect later on.
Nice Mosaic Work
Four stories make up the structure of Agha Bozorg Mosque. There is not much decoration on the dome as it appears from outside. Above the entrance, you can see the lofty badgirs (wind towers). The two minarets, visible on both sides of the huge dome, are decorated well with colored tiles having geometric designs. Made of mud brick, there are many inscriptions from Quran carved on it against the beautiful mosaics. The front door is uniquely carved with many studs on it.
Scenic Location
Since the courtyard, along with some of the chambers, is located on the lower level of the complex, it gives a great view from a distance. There is a pool and a nocturnal area for summer use in the center of the Agha Bozorg Mosque. The dome is doubly covered and is based on an octagonal platform. It looks larger because of the outer covering.
There are skylights on the dome along with many religious inscriptions which make the building look quite attractive. The ceilings of the nocturnal areas have been plastered, which gives a very simple look to them. The mosque has also got a library. Make sure you visit this sight during your trip to Iran.
