I love the Oxfam unwrapped catalogue every year. Check it out at www.oxfamunwrapped.com.au or click here. You buy something "for" Person X, but the gift actually goes to someone else, who needs it a whole lot more than either you or Person X do. Brilliant.

If you look through the entire range of gifts in the Oxfam Unwrapped list you'll see some amazing things in there. Things that make you reflect on just how gosh-darn damn-tootin' lucky we are, folks. Things like a bicycle ambulance. Clean water. Emergency hygeine supplies. A pig, or a duck. These aren't people who are on some kind of trekking holiday in Nepal, roughing it for a few weeks and taking lots of pictures. These people are living, eating, sleeping, working, falling in love, having babies, raising kids, getting sick, getting old, feeling happy, feeling sad, taking care of each other, suffering, dying... in conditions so bleak and squalid it boggles my imagination.

OK well enough of the bleeding obvious. Next I want to tell you about how I use this catalogue.

I reckon buying someone a gift from this catalogue is great energy, and people should be happy to receive the cards telling them they've just "received" fruit trees or clean water for a village, because someone who is unimaginably dirt poor is benefiting from this gift, which is better than getting another coin purse and neck scarf from me and then having to figure out where to put it along with all your other Christmas crapola.

But people are funny, and you gotta be careful. Some people really want that coin purse and neck scarf from some poovy little boutique on the main street. It makes them feel special and loved and stuff. So, you know, whatever, if that's what's going to make you happy, I'll get you that. Because I love you and I want you to be happy and I know that this will work for you.Giving the gift of poo this Christmas

But where this list really comes into its own is for buying presents for those... awkward people in your life. You know. People you just really don't "get", people you really dislike, people who are on your Christmas list for a good reason (usually because you are related to them) but who you have no connection with whatsoever. Those people. Use this list to transform that crusty resentful muddy energy into pure, joyful giving. Buy them a hen, or a cow, or a bicycle. Breathe into it, feel joyful that this weird relationship and all its stupidness has given birth to this wonderful gift for someone far, far less fortunate.

I've bought food and schoolbooks for the last few years for a relative who I am practically estranged from. If you have read any of my other posts, I have mentioned her before under the randomly chosen pseudonym, "Voldemort". It makes me feel good to get her this stuff. By her existence and her relationship to me, she is creating the cause for this great benefit to happen to someone else. How wonderful! I notice when I send her the accompanying card, how much softer I feel towards her. Don't get me wrong, I have no interest in pursuing a relationship with this person, but in giving this gift I can feel warmth and an ability to laugh at myself and her and how ridiculous we humans can be.

If you look at that list, and if you're thinking of buying for a "difficult" person in your life, you'll note that one of the options is a shovel-load of poo. We can all think of someone we'd like to give that to, hey!? But don't. Seriously. It's too obvious. A couple of years ago I really wanted to give the gift of poo to Voldemort. That would have been immensely gratifying and funny for me, but probably quite hurtful and provocative for her. I'm glad I didn't. And this year, I took it as a sign of how much wisdom and detachment I've gained around my relationship with Voldemort, that I am really, genuinely happy to give her a duck, rather than a stack of poo. Aww, I know- I say the sweetest things.
