Makeup affects how women are perceived

Makeup affects how women are perceived. A combination study by Proctor & Gamble, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston University and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute showed participants photos of women without makeup or with 1 of 3 cosmetic looks: natural, professional or glamorous. Some study participants looked at each photo for 250 milliseconds and others looked for an unlimited time. When the photos looked at quickly were rated on competence, likeability, attractiveness and trustworthiness, the ratings were higher with makeup. However, with more time to look the glamorous makeup looked less trustworthy. It seems time helps "make up" our minds.

Girlfriends boost women's optimism. According to a 2011 Gallop-Healthways poll, 25% of women ages 45-55 gave themselves a 10 out of 10 on optimism about their present and 5 years from then. That optimism was attributed to strong social support and girlfriend circles. However, it's the quality of friends - not the number - that's important. The most optimistic women spent about 6 hours daily in social interaction and had 4-12 friends they could depend on. Only 17% of men in that age group had the same optimism. They weren't as likely to have strong social networks. They depended on "manpower".

Birth control pills affect whom women are attracted to. Previous research has shown women prefer more masculine men during ovulation because they are presumed better breeders. In a study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, women who were taking the pill when they met their partner rated their partner less attractive than women who weren't taking the pill. However, the pill women rated their partner as a better provider. These women were also likelier to still be with their partner. It seems birth control pills help control hormonal variations during the menstrual cycle - giving women more control.

Freezing their eggs prolongs women's chances to have a baby. With women getting married later, they're having babies later. Egg-freezing technology can help it from being too late - after ovaries are too old to function properly. However, the technology costs $6,500 to $15,000 per cycle and there's no guarantee of success. Women ages 32-35 when freezing their eggs have a 40%-50% chance of success. For ages 35-38 it's 35%; 39-40 it's 20%-25%; and over 40 it's less than 10%. Considering 5,000 women are using egg-freezing technology, it's the 21st century version of not putting all your eggs in 1 basket.
