Is There Any Way To Negotiate A Better Shipping Rate?

It is common for people that don't have a lot of experience with courier services

to assume that the prices that they are quoted for an order or which they see on a website are set in stone. However, this isn't always the case. There is sometimes a possibility for more flexibility in courier pricing than you may realize. If you want a chance at getting a better rate though, you need to be aware of some of these basic rules about negotiating your shipping rate.

The most important piece of advice you can get when trying to get lower shipping rates applies to every industry and negotiation. You have to ask for the better rate. It is guaranteed that no courier is every going to come to you of their own free will and offer to allow you to pay less for their services. This means that if you think you want or deserve a better rate, you have to take initiative and go the company with your concerns. This is the only way to open a dialogue about at least the potential of a better rate.

Your luck at getting a better price from your courier company is going to depend largely on two things. It's going to depend on how much money you spend with them, and the size of their own company. Different companies, based on their size and profit margins, have different corporate principals when it comes to negotiating rates. Some are going to encourage it, and at others it isn't even an option. The only way you can find out though is to ask them.

The reason the volume of your shipping is important is because if you spend a lot of money with a given courier, they're going to do more to keep your business. If you spread your business around between couriers already, none of them has any huge incentive to keep you around. On the other hand, if you spend a lot of money with a courier already and are considering going elsewhere for your services for a better rate, they may be motivated to offer you some kind of a discount.

Discount is the key word here. Instead of thinking about negotiating shipping rates as something you have to undertake with every order, you should try to get your company a permanent discount. This is a more common policy with courier companies than offering reduced rates on regular shipments.
