International Shipping Container Options for Personal Items
If you're arranging a home move overseas or you're shipping goods to set up a business
, you have choices when it comes to shipping containers. By considering your options, you can choose containers that will ideally suit your goods and your needs.
Corrugated Cardboard Boxes or Barrels
When packing for international shipments, you can use corrugated cardboard boxes or specially designed shipping barrels. In either case, be sure to wrap fragile items in newspaper or bubble wrap and fill excess space in your containers with filler material. You should use enough packing material so you feel confident about your containers being handled without delicate care.
Pallets and Shrink Wrapping
If you pack up many boxes, consider placing them on pallets and shrink wrapping the delivery. This will secure the boxes against movement and help minimize the odds of a stray box falling off the pallet. If you'd like your international shipping containers placed on a pallet and shrink wrapped, but can't manage this yourself, you may be able to arrange for this service through your shipping company.
20 or 40 Foot Shipping Containers
Cargo is shipped internationally in standard 20 or 40 foot containers. 20 foot containers offer 1,050 cubic feet of capacity, while 40 foot containers provide 2,200 cubic feet of packing space.
As a guideline, a 20 foot container can hold typical furnishings for a one or two bedroom house. 40 foot containers are appropriate for furnishings contained in an average four or five bedroom house.
Less than Full (LCL) Container Shipping
If your cargo doesn't require a full 20 or 40 foot container, less than full container load shipping or LCL is available. Your cargo will be shipped in a full sized container along with another customer's less than full load. This is a cost effective option for shipping smaller amounts of personal belongings safely and securely.
Regardless of the type of international shipping containers you use, your goods will be safely transported if packed properly. This is true of larger items such as cars, trucks and motorcycles as well as boxes containing artwork or other valuables.
If you're unsure exactly what type of containers will work best for your shipment, contact a reputable international logistics firm. A firm that offers both full container load as well as less than full container load shipping will be able to help you decide on the best options for your cargo.
