It is very important to have a clear understanding of how to brush your teeth properly in order to prevent dental problems such as gingivitis and tooth decay. Incorrect brushing technique often results in tooth abrasion, a serious condition in which the surface of the tooth gets worn away.

Here are a few tips that will tell you how to brush your teeth properly.

Apply only a small, thin strip of toothpaste on your premoistened toothbrush.

Use only an extra soft or soft bristled manual toothbrush.

Start brushing the upper left molars (back teeth) and then concentrate on the front surface of the tooth. From there, start working in a clockwise direction.

Always hold the toothbrush parallel to your teeth. Point the bristles of the toothbrush in the direction of the tissue, so that they are placed a little below the gumline. Apply pressure slightly to the bristles, so that they bent while brushing.

Gradually move the brush in a circular motion for roughly 10 seconds.

After completing the brush strokes, roll the bristles of the toothbrush away from the gum tissue in a sweeping motion. Repeat the above steps until the front surfaces of the top and bottom teeth have been properly cleaned.

Repeat the same steps for the upper and lower premolars and molars.

To clean the inside surface of the front teeth or the lingual surface, start brushing down the gumline in a flicking motion. Perform this action 2 to 3 times.

To clean the inside of the lower front teeth, the flick must be directed up and away from the gumline. Perform this action 2 to 3 times.

Then, brush the biting surface of the upper and lower premolars and molars.

Smoothly brush your tongue and the inside of your cheeks.

Rinse using water or mouthwash.

Tips:

Brush atleast twice a day, preferably in the morning and before you go to sleep.

Replace your toothbrush every three months when the bristles get worn out or bent back.
