How To Survive In The Business World Without Smoking

Share: You are at a party which is being held at the law firm where you have just been made a partner
. Everyone is laughing, talking, drinking, flirting, smoking. Stop right there. You haven't smoked in six months but tonight, with all the excitement and the promotion and your wife looking so beautiful and you feeling so high, there comes a craving from the depths of your being for a smoke. You struggle valiantly and finally, after a few moments, the urge to smoke leaves you. You have triumphed again.
It is really remarkable how we are pushed into habits by society. Many people just follow the dictates of fashion and culture by assenting to whatever the latest fad is. We truly are all like sheep, and have lost our individual way. Is it more important to drink several glasses of wine at a dinner just because others do it, or should one be true to his/her standards?
The same applies to smoking. We have come a long way and now there are many places where smoking is prohibited by law. And that decision was not arbitrarily made by some official on his day off. It was put into law because people were dying from second-hand smoke.
When we are teenagers, there is a great deal of peer pressure to get us to smoke. It is 'cool,' We don't want to seem out of the mainstream but we had always said that we wouldn't smoke. But the pressure gets to be too much and one cigarette starts us in a lifelong battle which often ends in lung cancer.
So from the teen hears on, we are pressured to 'buy this latest product,' or 'wear this new type of jacket,' or 'drive this make of car,' only to later realize that it wasn't what we wanted or needed. We are pressured on all sides to look a certain way, or to speak a certain way. It's time we decided, on our own, just what we want and don't want.
One of the worst pressures in business or polite society, is that of smoking. If you wish to become a non-smoker after years of trying, or you do not wish to ever start, you will be assailed on all sides to 'just try one.' We need to be wary and look the other way when offered the weed. A polite, "No, thank you," will usually be sufficient. If you don't start you will never have to go through the unpleasant process of stopping. And if you remain strong in your beliefs and desires, you will never again succumb to the blandishments of society.
