Choosing the right auto body shop is like choosing any other service provider youre
looking to build a long-lasting relationship with someone you trust to do right by you 100% of the time. Here are a few tips for finding the right fit for you.1. Listen to the Street
Anyone can advertise themselves as the best body shop in the city, but that doesnt make it so in fact, most of the time the opposite is closer to the truth.
Tune out the paid messaging and turn to customer recommendations. If the shop in question is near your house, ask your neighbours what their experiences have been. If its somewhere else, look to the web for reviews. There are industry-specific sites like this one you can try; or you can turn to more generic sources like Angies List, where you can get recommendations on the body shops and the products they sell.
2. Size Matters
The bigger the shop is, the more overhead they have and the more money theyll need to make to cover their costs. This means one of two things: either theyll charge their customers more or pay their people less. The latter directly affects quality as theyll be forced to hire less experienced mechanics (it could also mean stocking their shelves with inferior products). The former costs you more money.
Ideally, what you should be looking for is a shop with no more than 1.5 employees per work station or one non-mechanic for every two mechanics.
3. Scan the lot
You can deduce a lot about what to expect from an auto body shop by the kinds of cars theyre working on but its important to weigh all the factors. For example, lets say the shop is full of luxury sedans. Do the high-end brands make the shop more trustworthy? Or is the shop less trustworthy because all theyve got in the lot are sedans, traditionally easier to work on than sports cars, SUVs and trucks?
4. Shop around
While automotive physics and chemistry are pure science, diagnostics are certainly not. Every mechanic will have a different approach to troubleshooting your vehicle, and every mechanic will charge differently for their services. The key is to find one with a style that gels with you.
Are you the kind of person who wants their mechanic to go through everything they did in detail, or do you just want the bill and your keys? What levels of price, quality and efficiency are you comfortable with, and where are you prepared to give a little? Are you looking for a friendly conversation when you come in or do you want it to be all business?
The only way to answer those questions, and follow all the above advice, is to see a few different shops. Youre best to do your comparisons before a problem arises. Take a Saturday and hit up a few of the auto body repair shops in your area. Youll start to get an idea of what youre comfortable with, and youll know the right one for you when you see it.
