Holiday 2011: This Year's Top Three Holiday Destinations
Share: Well, that was Christmas
Well, that was Christmas. And New Year. And probably a whole load of broken resolutions too. January sucks almost as much as it blows, so it's time to start looking towards the future and the prospect of a much-needed holiday.
I'll start by going out on a limb with my first suggestion of Columbia. Mention this once violence-riddled country to most people and they'd run a mile declaring me a nutcase with no idea of what I'm talking about. But bear with me a minute and I'll elaborate. The rural areas are awash with vibrant cultures, lush mountains and picture-perfect beaches that are still relatively untouched by the masses. Take a trip to the capital city (Bogota) and you'll see how it is literally reaping the rewards of a major rejuvenation project. What was once a minefield of drug-dealers and AK47s is now bursting with museums, shopping opportunities and a really thriving nightlife. And the best time to go? The cooler spring and autumn months when the heat is a little more bearable.
Next on the list has to be New Zealand. Home of the Hobbits, New Zealand is Australia's prettier younger sister. Crashing waves meet emerald mountains, and with a plethora of eco and adventure tourism on offer, there literally is something for everyone. New Zealand is hardly a new addition to people's "I must go here before I die" list, but with year-round entertainment, I can't see it leaving any time soon either. If you're looking to catch the country's warm weather, book your jaunt between November and April. If it's skiing/snowboarding you're into, head over there between June and August.
The third entry has got to be Turkey. Not the most off-the-beaten-track country in the world, but in 2010 Turkey's capital Istanbul was the European Capital of Culture which means that it will still be reaping the rewards of last year's investment, without all the hubbub. Previously known as Byzantium and Constantinople, the capital straddles the mighty Bosphorus Strait is a must-see for anyone with an interest in history.
So there you have it, the first holiday list of 2011. Hopefully it's given a little inspiration and something to look forward to after January's end-of-month pay packet.
