Celebrities in HD: The Tabloid Craze

Share: I know, most of us do not like to admit it, but there is something that attracts our attention to celebrities that is absolutely irresistible
. Ranging to has-beens on reality shows such as Flava of Love, to watching newly-created celebrities on American Idol, its impossible not to watch and join in the fanaticism now attached to pop culture and its widespread availability. Trashy newspaper tabloids have turned into television gold. Having a similar affect to watching a car crash, even when its awful you cant help but look on. Celebrities and their quirky personalities keep us wanting more. Now our options are innumerable with the help of high definition television.
As Americans we work, we play, we go to social events and we have family dinners. How many times in those social interactions have you discussed at one point or another whether Suri Cruise is actually Tom Cruises son? Or whether Heidi and Spenser realize how ridiculous they sound? Or how exactly do you pronounce Heidi Klums Auf wiedersehen? All of these subjects are routed in pop culture and its availability; the celebrity craze is impossible to avoid! And if you work later and dont have time to tune in? Now there are so many options to watch and re-watch your favorite episodes with satellite television youll never be behind in a dinner conversation about Lindsay Lohans new sexual preference or whether Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are bffs again! The possibilities are endless and TV-watching has been revolutionized with the new technology available with HD TV.
Of course there are pop culture backlashes, and sad realities that come to our attention through these medias. The recent and tragic death of Brittany Murphy showed the sad and painful truth behind some celebrity lifestyles; just like us they are not immortal. Maybe that has something to do with why we have such an attraction to celebrities; although they live these rich and glamorous lifestyles, however much we glorify them they are no more human than any one of us. For example, watching Patrick Swayzes valiant fight against cancer surely gave those with the same illness the courage to live their lives with such strength of character as well. The battles with anorexia of women celebrities such as Nicole Richie and Mary-Kate Olsen showed us the extreme pressure put on women with such intense careers, while Scarlett Johanssons womanly figure brought back the hope that women can once again hold agency over their bodies, no matter our celebrity status.
The celebrity-craze brought into the forefront of American culture has had interesting implications for the majority of us who have some knowledge of whats going on in the Hollywood world. Whether through tragic deaths or joyous marriages, celebrities keep us guessing, and inevitably keep us hooked. Thanks to satellite television we can keep up-to-date on this guilty pleasure that all of us have at one point given into.
