Theres No Spillages With Stillages At The Beer Festival

The beer festival is an annual event that takes place around the country in a number

of towns and cities, enabling local ale producers the opportunity to showcase and share the labour of their love with the general public. It may sound like quite a low key affair, but in actual fact it is a four day event attended by thousands of people all looking to find the perfect pint to recommend to their local brewery, and yet none of it would happen without the use of stillages.

The steel stillages that support all the barrels had to be constructed prior to the event and as event organiser I was unsure about the whole procedure. I had booked a team to come in and erect the steel structure a day early in case we had any problems before the breweries and suppliers arrived. When I popped down to the back door of the hall and saw the amount of metal work in the back of the lorry I started to panic.

It seemed that these stillages needed a lot of metalwork and I was starting to wonder if I had allowed enough time for the construction of our layout, as it turned out I needn't have worried. The crew came in, took one look at the plans, before conferring that it would be no problem. After a brief meeting with a cup of tea even I started to feel more optimistic about the project.

The team set to work with incredible speed, clasping, bolting and fixing all the areas that needed to be supported. Only occasionally would there be a need for my consultation, this usually occurred when the team found a way of enhancing the structure, making it even safer than we had planned.

By 3pm the stillages were fully constructed, the only panic we had experienced was when the lift to the upper floor of the building broke, which meant that we had to carefully manoeuvre the last few pieces up the stairs, while I had to make a phone call to the lift engineers.

The following day the suppliers poured into the hall early in the morning impressed with the structure that had been supplied. Apparently the year before another contractor had tried to substitute stillages with a basic form of scaffolding with disastrous consequences. One of the kegs had managed to roll off the end and damaged the floor of the hall, before rolling across the floor sending members of the general public to the left and right.

Thankfully our beer festival passed off without a hitch and I've managed to win the contract for next year.
