So you are hankering to visit northern Italy in February, but you're not sure what to see and what to do. Don't despair; there are lots and lots of special events that simply aren't available in the good old summertime. Here are a few of them. Get rolling; the month of February is almost upon us. We start our virtual counterclockwise tour in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the northeast corner of Italy. Then it's east to Lombardy, south to Liguria, and west to Emilia-Romagna.Every February the town of Pordenone is host to a Costumed Kangaroo Court. I would try to avoid any traffic tickets in this period. Pracchiuso is well known for its St. Valentine's Day celebration. The Italian Winter Triathalon including foot racing, mountain biking and skiing starts in Friuli ski resort of Piancavallo. This competition, also known as SnowForTri, continues into March. Our second region is Lombardy where the town of Berbenno di Valtellina hosts a medieval festival in honor of Saint Benigno De' Medici. Get up early for a parade in the morning. Saint Faustino is the patron saint of both Italian singles and for the city of Brescia that celebrates with fireworks. Lucky singles may set off...more

The beach is where we socialized, hung out and spent our summers. During the day we watched the boys surf and fried our bodies with baby oil. I don't remember there being any such thing as sun screen in the 70's and if there was, we never used it. It was tanning oils and tanning lotions, anything to bronze the body. Now that I am in my late 40's, I am wishing I hadn't spent six hours a day in the sun with no protection but hey, who is ever going to be 4O something when you are sixteen, certainly not me.The beach, with its pounding waves, cute boys and endless sun was were you could always find me and my friends. I don't think we ever got in the water, but we sure spent a lot of time on the sand. Nights were the best, with bon fires and friends around them. There was a train that went close by to where we spent our summer nights and we often talked of hoping on when it slowed down to see where it would take us. Maybe we should have, but I guess it is a good thing we never did. I always thought of what my parents would say if I called them from San Francisco and asked them to come pick me up!Well, back to the dilemma of a bathing suit. Like I said, my friends were all...more
