Honeysuckle Hill B&B - A Family Affair by:Fred Riley

Family. There is nothing like time spent with family, is there? Would you consider vacationing with family? Or even spending a long weekend with family? Or hosting a family event away from home? You're thinking of a big venue, aren't you? A hotel with 200 rooms or more? Staff that changes every 8 hours? Breakfast that's been kept warm under heating lights, or even worse, is wrapped in cellophane?I'm thinking of something more personal. My wife...more

Bug Me, Please! A Visit to the Victoria Bug Zoo by:Ron Kirstein

Today I am off to the Bug Zoo with my friend and co-worker Lisa. We are on a mission to check out some of the attractions in Victoria and report on them. The Bug Zoo is located at 631 Courtenay Street, just off of Douglas. It is only a few blocks from the famed Empress Hotel and only two blocks from popular Government Street. When Lisa and I walk through the front door, we are greeted by Carol, the congenial proprietor. The admission area and accompanying gift shop are awash with color and all kinds of neat toys, games, and whimsical items. It is immediately uplifting. As we enter the Zoo, we find a young, energetic host in the midst of a demonstration of live giant Walking Stick bugs. He places them into the hands of willing onlookers as he explains how they live and eat. One falls to the floor and immediately goes into camouflage mode: it shapes itself to look like a blade of grass. How cool is that!Next we are off to visit the large African Millipedes. Apparently they do not have a thousand legs. They had so many that their discoverers gave up counting and settled on "one thousand". Although they look like doggie do-do, they apparently are quite clean. The host asks the crowd...more

Paragliding in Olu Deniz by:Shereena Lingiah

There are few places in the world better suited to the thrill of Paragliding than the Turkish resort of Olu Deniz. But how does one go about arranging it? Can anyone Paraglide? What does it require? As a sport that not many people have had the opportunity to try, many of these questions hang in the air (apologiesÂ…) when the subject is raised. With this in mind, a 'Question and Answers' approach would seem to be the most helpful to anyone looking to enjoy the sport on their Olu Deniz holidays. What exactly is Paragliding?Paragliding is a free-flying, foot-launched recreational sport. Using a canopy that looks like a parachute, but acts like a rigid wing, the pilot takes a few steps to launch themselves from a suitable slope and is immediately airborne. Using a few simple controls they are then able to soar over ridges, rise upon warm air currents and travel great distances with minimal effort. Is it safe? With well maintained equipment and sensible planning Paragliding can be said to be extremely safe. The companies that you will encounter on your Olu Deniz holidays hire only professional and experienced pilots, only fly when weather conditions are agreeable and are equipped with...more
