Stranded on the side of the road is not where you want to be on a cold winters day
. Its a dangerous place to be even on a good day. Whether your vehicle has just few miles, or many, theres no guarantee that it will be trouble-free. Theres always the possibility that some day you'll find yourself with a radiator overheating, a punctured tire, failing brakes,and myriads of other problems. Remember its important to stay calm until you can get to a close-by auto shop for help.A few safety tips to keep you and your family safe:
* Until you can get your vehicle stopped, dont panic and dont over-react.
* Get over to the shoulder as quickly and safely as possible, out of the flow of traffic.
* Turn on your hazard flashers so that other drivers recognize that you are having problems. Be familiar with the location of the flashers when you need them.
* Dont let anyone get out of the vehicle unless theres smoke, fire, or you cant get your vehicle out of traffic. If possible, get your car to the nearest auto shop.
* If the car absolutely will not run, call for roadside assistance or a near-by auto center for towing.
* Avoid leaving your vehicle to walk for help unless absolutely necessary. If you have to walk, stay on the left-hand shoulder facing traffic on a two-way highway. On a freeway, walk as far to the right as possible.
* Dont abandon your vehicle while waiting for a tow truck to arrive. If they cannot repair your vehicle on-site and get you going again, they can tow it to an auto shop for repairs.
