Why Is London Such A Popular Tourist Destination
Share: Second only to Paris, London is the most visited city in the entire world
, surpassing other massively popular cities such as Tokyo, New York and Sydney. With 27 million people spending at least a single night stay in the city in 2009 (15 million of which came from outside of the country), according to a report published by Visit London, the total number of visitors did not waver more than 1.7 million visitors either side of 26 million on an annual basis. When looking at these figures, it is obvious that the attraction of London is something that is not waning, irrelevant of what financial state the global economy may be in.
Many people often ask why London is so popular and although the answer for many would be simply 'because it is London', the actual evidence is available to show just why London is a massively popular tourist destination.
For instance, one of the primary reasons for Londons popularity is its rich and intriguing historical aspects. Not only does the city actually have a vast amount of history, as it can be dated back to Roman times when it was initially called Londinium, but it is also considerably interesting, too.
To display all aspects of Londons history (as well as a broad range of historical aspects from all across the world and from many different periods throughout time), there is a substantial amount of museums available, many of which have a completely free entrance fee.
Share: According to the Museums Association, there are around 2,500 museums in the whole of the United Kingdom (with approximately 1,900 being fully registered as official museums) and the UK Guide website estimating that a substantial 12 percent of these are within the city of London alone. Displaying millions upon millions of different artefacts across a vast amount of exhibitions, the museums cover everything from the Brixton Riots in the Museum of London to the childhood experiences of World War 2 in the Imperial War Museum.
Further to the historical aspect that London provides, it would also be a very strong contender should the tag line 'variety is the spice of life' be awarded to a single city. From cuisine to culture and theatrical entertainment to art, London has one of the most diverse overall communities in the world.
Share: The diversity that is apparent in London is owed largely to the extremely mixed cultures that are found within the city. Statistics provided by the last government census in 2001 found that just under a third of residents within the city were born outside of England and that there were officially a minimum of 50 different cultural communities living within London, which has grown substantially over the past five decades.
Wherever you turn in London it is easy to see what influence the range of cultures has had on all aspects of life in London. For instance, the cuisines that are available differ considerably and range from traditional English to Hungarian, South Africa and Chilean. Whilst these may have initially been created to serve the communities that live within the boundaries of London, they are now enjoyed by everyone who visits.
London is one of the most popular cities anywhere in the world. With millions of people visiting each and every year, its popularity is proven time and time again simply by how many of these visitors return and recommend a visit to their friends, family and colleagues.
