Why Buy An External Hard Drive?

Why Buy An External Hard Drive?

As a consumer you may not have the vast needs to back up data as a corporation

, nor the access to file servers, tape systems or optical storage. These systems are designed to not be scalable to a consumer's needs and they are usually very expensive.

As a consumer, you might need to store MP3, music, video, multimedia, software programs and sensitive data. Some media files can be up to 1GB each, after they have been processed and upsized to optimal density. This can use up the capacity of an internal hard drive rapidly. Perhaps you have sensitive financial data you want to keep separate from the Internet or others in your environment. You can obtain the security and flexibility of a more robust corporate type solution, in the form of an external hard drive.

Buying an external hard drive can be done as separate components or a kit. A kit consists of an enclosure and a drive. The drive is usually two and a half inches to three and a half inches in depth and is held in an enclosure. The enclosure can provide power source, cooling, connectivity to the computer and protection.

Most external hard drives connect to the computer through a USB port. These ports are now "intelligent" in that once connection is made a "plug and play" dialogue is prompted making installation a snap.

The durability of an external hard drive will vary considerably on the basis of quality of the media and the enclosure. Many have been known to fail. It is advisable to purchase a robust system, perhaps of RAID quality to begin, to ensure your data is safe and will be protected. RAID stands for redundant array of inexpensive drives.

Some manufacturers know for quality include LaCie (of their high end systems), Western Digital, Seagate and Maxtor.
