Chester is a city filled with history and romance

. Formed as a site of Roman inhabitants the city has grown to be one of the most glorious and interesting cities in the north west of England.

Chester began its journey to becoming one of the most historical cities in England when the Romans landed there in AD70. The Romans initial interest in Chester stemmed from the fact that it is situated at the head of the River Dee. Careful investigation at the Chester Racecourse, also known as the Roodee, will reveal the remains of initial city walls; which is built where the old harbour of Chester once was.

The architecture of the city of Chester has developed over years and years from the start made by the Romans and is now deeper in detail and interest. Examples of neoclassical, Tudor, Georgian and Victorian influences flood the surroundings making any visit quite awe-inspiring.

The city walls for which Chester is famous for and are frequently the feature of photographs offer an ideal starting point for your visit to the city. Walk around the thought-provoking and enlightening two mile circuit of walls; the most complete wall enclosure of any city in Britain; giving the chance to view many of Chester's famous monuments. Similarly to the rest of Chester, the walls were first erected by the Romans to defend the 'castra' or Roman fort. Settlers to the city have made their own additions and deletions with the resulting walls having been added to as recently as the 1960s.Welcome to Chester, UK by:Chris Morton
