, Wak Hai Cheng Bio Temple is the oldest Taoist temple in the land. Engulfed by the skyscrapers within this concrete jungle, this humble yet prominent place of worship makes its unique mark in the city. The temple which was built in 1855 is also known as Yueh Hai Ching Temple, and is said to the only temple in the land that is home to 3D moulded ornaments atop its roof. The temples name is said to mean Temple of the Calm SeaThe temple is a marvellous sight though humble against the skyline, with its rosewood woodwork and is adorned with elaborate roofing and engravings of Chinese legends. A true exhibit of Chinese craftsmanship can be seen on the roof with its figurines of a traditional Chinese village. It is also said that the temple was built in order to convey gratitude to the sea for a safe passing. The temple is divided into two parts, where one is dedicated to the Heavenly Father, Tua Lau Yah and the other to the Heavenly Mother, Ma Zhou.
After nearly a century later, the temple underwent restoration with the final results being unveiled in the year 1997. Restored to its former glory, the Wak Hai Cheng Bio Temple has attracted many devotees and tourist over the years that come to pray in the midst of the Business District of Singapore.
