Volcanic Ash Travel Insurance - Travel Plans Affected By Volcanic Eruption
The volcanic ash from Iceland recently caused considerable disruption to people's travel plans.
Many people made claims on their travel insurance policies for accommodation they weren't able to use or they were delayed at their point of departure or return. They assumed that such claims would be met.
However when they received a letter saying their claim had been declined, they were furious. Why were insurers declining claims related to the volcanic ash?
Many insurers are not covering such claims because they say the situation is not "adverse weather conditions", which is one of the criteria for delay claims to be met. The insurer of this policy, however, is not taking this view. If you are delayed, you will be able to claim an amount for each block of hours. If you're delayed for longer than 24 hours, you can choose to abandon your trip. You will then be able to claim for you irrecoverable expenses, for example: accommodation, car hire costs in the country you're visiting etc. You will be able to claim to the limit covered by the Cancellation section, which is 3,000 per person.
However, you must have taken out the policy before any announcement was made that the airport to which you are travelling to or from was being closed or that the airspace in which you were due to fly was going to have a ban imposed on it.
You can buy a policy just for one trip or an annual, multi-trip policy.

If an airline cancels or changes your flight, they are technically in breach of contract with you and have to offer you a refund or an alternative flight. Furthermore, if the airline is an EU one, under EU law, they are also obliged to provide you with food and accommodation if you've arrived at the airport and your flight is delayed.
