Visit Kerman Friday Mosque When You Travel To Iran
Kerman Friday Mosque is a prominent example of the Muzaffarid architecture
, which was built by Amir Mobarezeddin-e-Mozaffari-e-Meybodi-Yazdi in 1350. Just after the death of Abu Sa'id of the IlKhanid dynasty in 1335, the Muzaffarids came to power and reigned over the country till 1393. Among the many works of art made by them, which you will discover as you travel to Iran, is this famous mosque.Situated approximately 900 km to the south-east of Teheran, Kerman stands at the center of the axes which join the south with the north and the west to the east. Not surprisingly, this town is well known for mercantile activities with a well spread-out bazaar, which begins near the mosque and ends at the Arg Square.
Layout of the Mosque
The construction of the Kerman Friday Mosque is based on the four-ivan plan and is quite similar in structure to the Friday mosque at Yazd, which was also a contribution of both the Il Khanids and the Muzaffarids. There is also a rectangular courtyad at one side of the main passageway around which runs an arcade. There are four ivans in the middle of each side.
The main ivan is to the south and has galleries on the second floor. It is thus at a greater height than the other three ivans and joins the court with the hall. The ivan at the north marks the main entrance. The south and the west also allow entrances to the mosque.
Addition of the Mihrab
Many additions were made to the Kerman Friday Mosque through the years by the succeeding rulers. The sixteenth century witnessed the construction of the mihrab on the qibla wall. There is a semi-dome with two muqarnas tiers, tastefully decorated in tile mosaics.
You get to see arabesque motifs here which constitute common sight in most of the mosques when you travel to Iran. Glazed terracotta in yellow and blue beautifies the portion which joins the mihrab's walls with the vault in the room. There is not much decoration on the other parts of the walls.
Beautiful Decoration
The tile mosaic is reminiscent of the work done in the fourteenth century with the four main colors of light and dark blue, yellow and white gracing the main portal and the front of the arcade. You will also find a variety of tile mosaics on other parts of the arcade and the ivans. Kerman Friday Mosque is well known for its design and decoration.
