Using Google To Your Advantage

Using Google To Your Advantage

I wonder how many people are aware of the many features Google offers those who utilize their search function

? For the most part, people go to Google and type in their chosen keywords or search terms and look no further than the result options that they are given.

But, there are other options and functions that Google offers the searcher that are, for the most part, completely over-looked. We treat Google as though we've received a new gadget. We put it in automatic mode forgetting about all the other functions, controls and enhanced search possibilities it offers.

For example, lets say you want to speed up your search time with Google or maybe you just want to learn more about your keywords to enhance your results, then it is time to stop scratching the surface and explore the search functions of Google a little deeper.

Most of us are familiar with the page that comes up when we type our keyword into Google. Down the center are all the matches that Google has come up with using our keyword and over to the right and on the top of the page are the sponsored ads (paid for advertising.) But, how many of us take it a step further by utilizing the "Show Options" tool?

The "Show Options" tool is a favorite tool of mine and one I use often. Located under the Google logo, this tool allows you to easily narrow your search down to a more defined area with the options it provides you.

For instance, typing in "how to set up a blog" pulls up a wealth of information both in matches and in sponsored links and thousands of pages. The key to avoiding frustration and saving time is to narrow your search down by utilizing the "Show Option" tool.

Once you've clicked on the link to this tool, you'll see a new menu pop up...located on the left hand side of your page. This menu provides options for you to narrow your search...for example "how to set up a blog" to a more defined area...such as videos, forums, reviews, books, blogs and news.

You can easily navigate to these pages by clicking on the link provided.

Additionally, you can narrow your search further by clicking on options such as "past hour, past 24 hours, past week, past year." These are all located in the same menu under "Any time." This function can help you if you want to see if your blog post...with those keywords (the ones you typed into Google) has been indexed by Google yet.

Additionally, you can click on "Sort by Relevance" or "Sort by Date. The most recent pages will appear. Using this feature will allow you to find the most recent articles...some that were written minutes ago in your results! The advantages to that are obvious.

There are two more search functions that I employ in my searches with Google. One is referred to as "Timeline" and the other is "Wonder Wheel"." With the "Timeline" function, you are able to study how the topic has evolved over time via a bar graph. My choice of "how to set up a blog" shows the evolution of this topic from the year 1980-2008.

You have the option to break the graph down even further by clicking on one of the years...which then breaks the graph down into months. If you find that in one month there was a huge spike, you may want to investigate that information further.

The "Wonder Wheel" not only has a fun name, but is the tool you're looking for if you want further research, or expanded ideas on topics you might like to write about or create a product from.

The "Wonder Wheel" takes your keyword and places it at the center of a wheel with related topics spiking off from it...like the spokes on a bicycle wheel. If you click on one of these spokes, that link then becomes a another wheel center with its own related spokes. You can obviously see how invaluable this tool can be.

In the future when you use Google to search, don't just set it in "automatic" mode and forget about the rest. Make use of the tools and options that Google provides and enhance your search. Make your experience more fulfilling, easier, quicker and more focused.

Remember, these tools are free to use, but can provide valuable results.
