The printed word Hindi going global through news

A large chunk of news coverage in every country is served in the vernacular. This is important considering the fact that the mother tongue being the primary language spoken will attract more viewership in the country itself and also in other countries where the Diaspora has spread to.

India, whose population is second largest in the world, has a wide array of languages and as one moves from one place to another the aural senses are treated with a shifting bouquet of languages. Hindi being the national language of India is spoken widely. Though not everybody speaks Hindi, most are capable of understanding some rudimentary Hindi vocabulary. India has 28 states and most states have their distinct language. With the exception of some states in the South, most Indians can carry on a decent conversation in Hindi.

Most of Northern India speaks Hindi. This includes the states Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Northern Bihar, and Himachal Pradesh. Outside India, many countries have a sizable Hindi speaking population. Some countries with Hindi speaking groups are Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana, Trinidad, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, South Africa, Singapore, Uganda, Nepal, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. With numbers like this, it becomes essential that the Hindi speaking population within and outside India have the option of gaining access to information in the mother tongue.

Along with the English dailies, every state has a number of newspapers which are printed in the vernacular. Also, many newspapers solely serve news in the National language, Hindi. In fact the Indian Readership survey for the first quarter of 2010 lists three Hindi dailies in the top three slots on theAverage Issue Readership (AIR)basis. The dailies Dainik Jagran, Dainik Bhaskar, and Hindustan which publish news in Hindi dominate the top three positions in the survey.

Dainik Jagran which reigns the roost delivers news in Hindi to the states Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, Uttrakhand, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Chattisgarh, West Bengal, and Orissa.

The second largest circulated daily, Dainik Bhaskar, covers Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, Himachal, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharastra, and Gujarat.

Hindustan has a smaller spread with the states Punjab, Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand under its fold.

As the medium for disseminating information continues evolving, the major publications also have adapted to the new advances. With the boom in the internet industry and mobile services, they have now taken their information to these new mediums. English being the primary language in the Internet space, Hindi news coverage provided by the News houses on the internet becomes niche and thus gains a wider audience. Where the scope of the printed daily is limited, the impact of an online publication of the same is far reaching.

The leading published dailies have taken their content to the Cyber-space and are providing the Indians readers an option to consume news in Hindi- their mother tongue. The websites www.dainikjagran.com, www.bhaskar.com, and www.livehindustan.com provides its Hindi speaking audiences within India and outside with the complete news coverage in Hindi.

Hindi is now no longer limited within the boundaries of India but has through technology spread its reach far and wide. With printed books being a translated in several languages, it only stands to reason that the daily news requirement of Indians within India and abroad be delivered in the National language through a far-reaching medium and the major Indian News publications were quick in assimilating this new knowledge and going global with their information. With its strong network in news coverage, Hindi news houses are daily gaining strength and viewership throughout the globe.
