The World Fights Cancer
According to recent data from the World Cancer Research Fund
, the last decade has seen a 20% increase in the number of cases of cancer detected worldwide. About 12 million cancer diagnoses are made each year, seven of which affect patients in the so-called developed countries. Most importantly, the WCRF estimates that about a quarter of all cases could be easily avoided controlling risk factors like diet, physical activity and overweight. And most interestingly, about 50% of all cases could be avoided through these and other preventive measures, especially the avoidance of tobacco & alcohol, exposure to radiation & chemicals and unsafe sexual practices.The United Nations will be soon discussing in a New York summit the possible solutions to fight back those diseases known as non-communicable, which include cancer, diabetes and several respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. The WCFR points out that more information on prevention and protective habits is needed for the general population, but also strong and decisive worldwide policies that stop promoting unsafe practices in our everyday sociocultural environment (e.g. publicity), or make changes in lifestyle difficult (e.g. healthy food costly prices). Looking at numbers, 36 million new cases of non-communicable diseases occur each year and up to an 80% belong in the so-called developing countries, where they mean a huge loss of lives, due to poverty, lack of medical attention, etc.
The world keeps fighting cancer, even harder today. Everyday there is a new ray of hope, usually in the form of molecular research results. Global initiatives are more possible now than in the past, and could play a central role in cutting global numbers. But what can we do at a personal level?
Be informed and use well this information. Several people in your closest social circle will develop some form of cancer. Know what can be expected: cancer can be cured in about 50% of cases, but this figure varies greatly depending on localization, stage when detected, and other factors. Learn how to get the best out of emotional management of the immune system -yes, it works. Live healthily and help the people you know to do so: changes are less difficult when shared! And usually when they are undertaken gradually but, well, some people would prefer a radical approach... Remember, it is never late to learn how to enjoy life in a different way, and what is most important, it is possible. Although we are not saying it is easy -what would be the thrill in changing, then? Look for valuable resources on diet, physical activity and healthy habits targeted to cancer prevention, act and spread the word. The world keeps fighting cancer, and so should all of us.
