The Story Behind The American Refrigerator

Share: From a king to a pauper, almost everyone owns a fridge these days
. Introduced in America in 1857, as just a box that cooled, it has evolved into a sleek home appliance that not just cools but does it in style.
Back then, the awkwardly large refrigerating device was not fit for home use and took space as much as a king size bed would. Other severe drawbacks included the loud noise they used to make, the technology in itself was far from perfection and it was extremely expensive for common people.
Those jumbos were used mostly by commercial establishments for preserving food prior to selling them. In 1920's, the design for first compact refrigerators evolved and half a decade later refrigerators started becoming popular in America.
The first bulk production was carried out by General Electric, the model of which was based on a sulfur dioxide cooling system. A million refrigerators produced by General Electric then, gave people the power to preserve food in their own homes!
You may still find some of these fridges in American households, but of course they are not in production anymore. It is these GE fridges which catalyzed the acceptance of the refrigerator as a home appliance worth buying.
By the late 1930's, refrigerators made home in over 60% of the American households giving rise to newer designs for greater efficiencies and good looks. Around the 1950's, the first compact model saw a change in design with introduction of a separate deep-freezing compartment, which in turn was an instant hit. The deepfreeze, which was backed by the automatic defrosting techniques were perfected by then. Also, the side-by-side style of refrigerators became very popular too.
This was obviously helped by automatic defrosting techniques which had been perfected by then. The side-by-side style of refrigerators became very popular too.
The innovations and improvisations did not stop. An American refrigerator of today has the best of technology blended with style. With its intelligent and interactive technology it is designed to fulfill the existing and the latent needs of a consumer. It has indeed come a long way.
