Share: The Chinese Spring Festival is one of the most valuable and longest traditional holidays in China
. It is also called what we popularly knew as the Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year - from the lunisolar calendar of the Chinese.
If one is invited in a Chinese gathering or celebration, one has to learn their customs and practices in order to celebrate with the Chinese the proper way. That way, good social interaction is achieved in the most important part of their culture, the Chinese New Year.
The festival usually begins on the first day of the Chinese calendar, and ends on the 15th day of the same month, which they also celebrate as the Lantern Festival. This tradition has been part of the long history of China. The Chinese New Year says a lot about how people in China behave and the things that they believe in.
Several variations of the Chinese New Year are present in other regions in China. Their ways of celebrating it differs from one region to another, and is normally based on their regional traits. The Chinese in general, spend their money on certain things - food, presents, and decorations among others. As an established habit every New Year, families thoroughly clean their homes, from floor to roof. They believe it's a way of driving away bad luck and ill-fortune, and in return, attracts prosperity and good luck.
Windows and doors of many houses are decorated with red paper cut-outs and couplets. They represent happiness, wealth and longevity. On the Chinese New Year eve, families have a feast which includes delicious Chinese dishes such as ducks, pigs, chicken, and sweets. The night is then ended with firework displays. The next day, children customarily greet their parents a happy new year, and wish them good health. As a treat, children receive money placed in red envelopes.
The Chinese New Year is a very special occasion. It's the time when people reconcile and leave bitterness behind. It's also the time when people just enjoy each other's company and wish everyone peace, love and success.
