The Antarctic Trip

The Antarctic Trip

This well traveled tourist has seen a large part of our planet

. This ninety-one year-old has now visited Antarctica too.

Seeing Antarctica with her own two eyes was extremely important to her. Though she?d been in this area twice before, this was the first time she?d actually viewed Antarctica.

According to our tourist, the plane never landed, but they certainly traveled over it.Mountain peaks, glaciers and fjords were visible during her four hour flight. At one point they even descended to 300 feet above the ground.

Fog covered one of the mountain ranges they passed. Clear skies and sunny weather gave them perfect viewing opportunities. The Antarctic Trip

The air temperatures were well below freezing. It was early March, which marks the end of the Antarctic summer. The passengers were able to hear a continent researcher lecture during the flight.

One of the things this lifelong birder really wanted to see was the penguins. Though she didn?t see any on the flight, her daughter was able to see a colony of penguins in the distance.

They took a ship to the Falkland Islands. These are off the coast of Argentina.

She was finally able to see hundreds of Magellan penguins when she reached the East Island of the Falklands. She had to take a smaller boat there.Magellans stand the tallest of all penguin species.

The two traveled for 16 hours by air from the US to South America, where the cruise left dock. South American ports were visited, and passengers could take the chance of swimming in the ship?s pool. The ninety-one year-old jumped right in, and earned herself a certificate for doing so, without worrying about the frigid temperatures.

After docking in Chile, the passengers were driven to Santiago, where they continued to tour. Then they flew to Rio. The cruise, which was three weeks long, had ideal weather.

They could even see the Southern Cross, which is really hard to find because it is the smallest of all the constellations, due to the excellent clarity of the night sky. When she?d last seen South America, the lady cruised the major river system and saw a big city. She returned to the rain forest surrounding that major rivers and witnessed the severe destruction that had befallen it in the few years since her last visit.

She worries about the loss of bird habitat. Having traveled to Africa to see her friends, she took a Safari.

A visit to Antarctica completed her ?collection? because she had already been to. She finally visited them all with her recent trip to Antarctica.
