Ten Steps to Saving Serious Money This Month

Does all of your spare change go in the big jar? Printing coupons? Packing lunch from leftovers? Sounds like you've resolved to be smarter and more discerning with your money in 2011. You're not alone! At parents.com, they say that two-thirds of posting moms say they "hope to get out of debt, save for specific projects, or eliminate excess spending this year." These are great goals that will take some careful planning and a few rules to follow from finance experts. Just one or two ideas a month, and you'll be happily surprised by how easy it can be.1. During this winter month, turn your thermostat down 5 to 10 degrees at night (or program it to do so automatically) for a 5 to 10 percent savings on your monthly bill. If you're going away for the weekend, lower it to 55 degrees.2. Also, think about that gift card your aunt gave you for Christmas, to a store you never set foot in. Consider trading it in at exchange sites like giftcardrescue.com or plasticjungle.com for cards redeemable at retailers you shop regularly.3. Skip the salon and cut your own kids' hair. Books and internet how-to's are available, for a family savings of $25 or more.4. Help your kids make their own valentines out of scrap paper, old magazines, and other craft-friendly household materials. A homemade "Be mine" can be just as meaningful as the store-bought variety.5. Cut down those electric bills by unplugging unused small appliances, forgoing the dry cycle on your dishwasher, and turning off unused lights. Assign one of your children to be in charge of lights out: "A child can make a great sergeant-in-arms over electricityhe or she will be relentless about making sure the older siblings turn off lights," says financial expert Beacham.6. Make a little extra at dinner time and package the food up right then for lunch tomorrow. You'll have your lunch ready when you leave in the morning, which is a savings of another kind.7. Drink water. Drink lots of water! If you cut back on or stop buying bottled sports drinks and sodas, you'll save oodles each month, and feel better too.8. Be on the lookout for great buys on kids' clothes at garage sales and church rummage sales as the weather warms. You'll walk away with barely worn outfits, shoes, and more. For even more savings, sell the clothes your own kids have outgrown, too, and put the earnings back into the wardrobe budget.9. By doing your own pedicures, or doing it with a pal, you can save as much as $40 a month.10. Go prepared to the grocery store! It's a fact that you spend less if you have a list, don't go hungry, shop the sales (and plan your menus around them), and only go once during the week. After 30 minutes in the store, the more money you spend goes up exponentially! Get in and get out, but keep to your list so you don't have to make a return trip! With this list in hand, take control of your spending this year and use that excess to make life better.
