Summer Of 42 is set during World War 2 this new movie tells the story of day-dreamer Hermie and his friends Oscy and Benjie
. Unlike most war movies though, this film deals with the problems faced by people who stayed at home and in particular Dorothy , an older woman whose husband is a pilot away on active duty.Its kind of teen movies meets band of Brothers but surprisingly it works rather well. One of the main characters is Oscy who basically spends most of his time trying to get laid, while his quieter friend hermie is actually the one who has all the luck. Hermie falls in love with the older Dorothy, and when her husband returns to the war as a navy, Hermie shyly approaches her.
"Summer of '42" really sets out to depict the loneliness of a war bride during this troubled time. Dorothy played by Jennifer O'Neill is staying at a beach cabin hoping that her husband will soon return from the conflict.
At the same time, Hermie, who is your typical horny teenager is staying in a nearby beach cabin with his two buddies. They are constantly looking for new conquests and when Hermie meets Dorothy in the local store he is immediately drawn to her. He sets about doing small odd-jobs for her and they soon become good friends. The story takes a turn when Dorothy receives news that her husband has been killed in action. Rather than wade in, Hermie seduces her in a gentle way that pleases Dorothy.
Summer of 42 successfully portrays the emptiness of the young women whose husbands went to fight in WW II. It is a pleasant diversion from the standard fare of todays main stream cinema and relies more on implied sexuality rather than overt scenes of violence and sex.
