Study Shows Omega-3 Supplements May Protect Brain From Traumatic Injury

As California brain injury lawyers, we're constantly updating ourselves with new research in the field of brain injury diagnosis and treatment

. An intriguing new study shows that omega-3 supplements could actually protect the brain from traumatic brain injuries.

The omega-3 fatty acid is called docosahexanoic acid, and is commonly found in fish oils. However, for the purposes of the study, the supplement was isolated from algae resources. Omega-3 has long been known to possess nutritional benefits for the brain. It is believed to enhance brainpower. However, new research suggests that docosahexanoic acid may not just enhance memory and reasoning, but may also protect the brain from injury.

Researchers from the West Virginia University in Morgantown studied two groups of rats, one of which was given the omega-3 - fatty acid supplements, while the other group was not. The rats were given about 40 MG of the docosahexanoic acid for every 1 kg of body weight. After about one month of the supplement treatment, the researchers induced traumatic brain damage in the rats, and studied the two groups.

They found that the group of rats that had received the docosahexanoic acid omega-3 supplement showed fewer signs of injuries to the brain. The researchers investigated the kind of damage to tissues and behavioral responses. They found that the rats that were given the supplement had much lower tissue damage than the rats that were not given the supplement.Study Shows Omega-3 Supplements May Protect Brain From Traumatic Injury

That wasn't the only encouraging sign that researchers found. They also found that rats that had been given the supplement showed a much reduced expression of the beta amyloid protein that has been linked to Alzheimer's disease.

While this is an interesting study, it doesn't conclusively prove that omega-3 fatty acid supplements can provide any kind of protective barrier against traumatic brain injuries. However, the results of the study are intriguing enough for California injury lawyers to suggest that certain categories of people, who are at a high risk of brain injuries, be given the supplements to reduce their chances of sustaining a brain injury. For instance, professional athletes and college football players are at a much higher risk of suffering brain injuries. There has been much controversy recently over the high incidence of brain injuries among professional athletes, and the low protection that is provided to them.

California injury attorneys would like to see more studies conducted into whether these omega-3 fatty acid supplements can help prevent brain injuries among such people. Other categories of people who are also at a high risk of brain injuries like schoolchildren and the elderly who are at a risk of slip and fall accidents, may also benefit from the supplements.

Diagnosis and treatment of brain injuries can be extremely complex, and it makes sense for people to equip themselves with the tools to prevent injury in the first place.
