Sprinters Leg Mechanics - Do it Right Or Get Devastating Leg Injuries

As a sprinter your own worst nightmare is getting injuries on the track. But how can you prevent this from happening? The first thing you could do is to focus on running with the proper leg mechanics. A majority of sprinters injuries comes from the legs in the form of hamstring pulls and going muscle injuries.

And if you usually do not would like to be part of the statistics then listen up to these imperative steps on how you can run with proper leg mechanics.

* The first and most important thing that causes lots of sprinters injuries is over striding. Back in the 70s a lot of coaches preached to the athletes that they must extend the lower leg out in order to increase their stride length. What they didn't understand was that this was improper leg mechanics. By extending out your lower leg not only are you going to cause injuries but you are also going to drastically slow down your times.

* Extending your lower leg out also causes more braking forces at ground contact which you don't want as a sprinter. The less braking forces you have as a sprinter, the quicker and more efficiently you'll run. So as a sprinter the one thing you have to do is to focus on stepping over your opposite knee and stepping down. The leg action should be more of an up-and-down marching motion.

* Another common problem that causes injuries in sprinters is excessive backside mechanics. When your own leg extends too far behind your body, you end up opening your hamstring to more injuries. What you need to try and do is to tilt your hips forward in order to prevent your own legs from reaching too far behind you.
