Scary And Serious Online Bullying
We have been informed that nearly 40 percent of kids who were asked said that they had heard of
, witnessed or been involved in online bullying before. One third of all kids who were surveyed had said that they were the ones who had been victimized by someone else by way of cyber bullying. These bullies target their victims by way of their cell phones with text and picture messages, they place prank cell phone calls and stalk them on their social networking sites too.If this does not sound too harmful, think again. A young girl just this past January took a fatal overdose of painkillers after class mates started to bully her at school and then started to cyber bully her on the networking site Bebo, where they had posted hateful messages about her. It is as serious as harrassment in the schools and is just as devastating as any verbal abuse or physical abuse.
The seriousness of these situations has been recognized and jail terms and sentences are now being dished out to offenders. It is as serious as offline offenses are, and people can no longer get away with it. There are several people and organizations now that try to help children understand online bullying, how dangerous it can be and how to prevent it and stop it. There are mentors who are being trained and have undergone training to deal with this new cyber offense, and many of these mentors had been plagued by bullying themselves while in school. The advice and support they give to others is invaluable.
The most common problem that children have with offending kids is that they are often threatened with more punishment if they tell anyone what is going on, so they are reluctant to speak to anyone about it. The mentors who are engaged across the country sometimes just need to be given the confidence to go to an adult with what has been going on. It seems that the mentor approach is working where it is instilled, too some places have witnessed a 40% decrease in online bullying since the programs were started.
If you have any reason to believe that your child is being bullied or is doing the bullying, it can be a matter of life and death if you do not intervene quickly. There are children who have committed suicide because of online bullying, and if you do nothing, ask yourself if you would be able to live with that for the rest of your life or not.
