San Diego County Fines Provide Reason For Carrying Adequate Insurance, Even If It Is Cheap
Recently the San Diego Sheriff"s Office and the California Highway Patrol partnered to look for distracted drivers on the roadways of San Diego County
. Over a one-week period, law enforcement officials issued over 400 citations to those who were either texting or talking on a cell phone without the aid of a hands-free device. This number does not include all those who received additional citations because they were driving with a suspended license, an expired vehicle registration, or without proof of auto insurance.A survey from the state Office of Traffic Safety indicated that drivers in So Cal are a bit worse than the rest of the nation"s drivers when it comes to distracted driving. The San Diego Sheriff"s Department efforts in citing San Diego drivers would seem to confirm those results.
KPBS-News reports that Lt. David Gilmore, who serves as the traffic coordinator for the San Diego Sheriff"s department, likens driving while distracted to drunk driving. It is the same, he says, "In the fact that you"re not able to focus on your primary objective, which is to drive down the road and not have a collision." According to Gilmore, the safest thing to do if you feel that you must respond to a text while in your auto is to get to a place where you can stop and park.
In addition to the safety concerns, drivers should be deterred from driving while distracted because of the fines. The fines for distracted driving, and the other fines for driving without proper registration or proof of auto insurance are not cheap. If the threat of an accident, causing injury to self, or causing injury to another is not enough of a deterrent, the cost of the citations involved should be.
One of the individuals cited during the week long effort in San Diego urged others to give up the habit of texting and driving, even while admitting that it can be difficult. According to the 20-year-old, "I don"t like being with people who text and drive cause I don"t trust them. I grab their phone when they text, but it"s hard for me to put mine down."
If you want to avoid being among those paying heavy fines in San Diego County or elsewhere in California, stop texting while driving and make sure that you at least have the minimum auto insurance that is required by law.
