The history of the city will take us back to the years of 1867, when the area was inhabited for the very first time by a trading post established by Bart DeWitt. This trading post was established around the fort Concho. The settlement was named as 'Santa Angela' given by DeWitt in order to pay regards to his sister-in-law, but after some time the name of the town was changed into San Angelo.
The city was then walked on the path of development slowly and gradually it emerged as a cultural and economical center. Now the present day San Angelo is a major attraction among the people who love fishing and boating as it has three distinctive lakes.
The major and the must visit attractions in the city of San Angelo includes Fort Concho. This magnificent fort was established in the year 1867 on the banks of the river Concho. It was built in order to guard the settlements and to patrol. This is one of the best kept forts in the state.
In the year 1935, Fort Concho was included as a National Historic Landmark and has been operated since then. The fort also accommodates a museum known as the E.H. Danner Museum of Telephony. This museum exhibits a collection of more than thirty five thousand artifacts.
The Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial RiverStage is also a great place to visit within the city. It is an outdoor amphitheater situated right besides the banks of Concho River. The RiverStage has a proud venue and has been host to great artists like B.B. King, Ted Nugent, blues man and Los Lonely Boys. The stage has covered an area of about three thousand seven hundred square feet. The RiverStage houses restrooms, stage equipment rooms, storage and dressing rooms for the artists.
The stage is able to accommodated around nine hundred chairs that can place just in front of the stage while eight thousand more spectators can easily sit on the hillside.
San Angelo State Park is a fascinating place to visit and it is like an oasis of quality recreational activities. The park is stretched over an area of about 7677 acres with a range of amenities and facilities.
The park offers its guests the opportunity to go for picnicking, fishing, bird and wildlife watching. If you want to add some adventure to your trip, you can also go for hiking, mountain biking, boating and horseback riding. This is a great place to catch the glimpses of birds of more than two hundred and fifty species. The park has also designated hunting areas for the people who want some hunting but only during hunting season.
