Review of note-taking and thought-organizer applications
Review of note-taking and thought-organizer applications
Few will argue these days with the fact that we live in the era of information. It is also well known that its amount and complexity are growing rapidly every year, bringing more opportunities - and bigger challenges than ever. It is also true for our own personal information, like notes, different business cards, to-do lists etc.
It is a painfully familiar situation when one knows for sure that this file is somewhere on the disk, but one no-one knows whereand the full text search finds nothing as well The file may be accidentally found a month later because it has a completely different name and was kept in a completely different place.
It sometimes also happens that we need a file which has been left at the office or in the opposite, at home or you need that file in your business trip. The review above is about applications which are to solve these problems.
As you may see from the above there are two main problems these applications are to solve. First one is about keeping information in one centralized place which is web-cloud for sure, and second one is a systematization of personal or perhaps corporate data, and, what is also quite possible, a combination of both.
Let's start with a very interesting application DropBox (http://www.dropbox.com), the main and the only point of which is to store files in the so-called cloud a server in the Internet. To put it simple, you can copy any file to a special folder on your computer, which is synchronized immediately with a server in Internet network and becomes available to its owner from any computer or even a mobile phone. Very convenient, isn't it? There is no need to carry a memory stick about or send files by email. Simplicity is the key
Developers of EverNote (http://www.evernote.com) advanced a little more they not only place user's info on server and make it accessible from anywhere but also offer some kind of systematizing in order to make further search easier. All information in EverNote is divided into Pictures, Notes and Voice. There is also a possibility to attach each peace of information to a definite tag. However it is worth mentioning that this function is not the main one and has not a very convenient location somewhere deep in the interface, so that convenience of information browsing seems to go on the back burner.
The next one is CuteTag mobile application (http://www.cutetag.com) In this case developers, on the contrary, prompted the idea of systematizing to the forefront. Tags are placed at the main screen and are always visible. However, at the moment the program doesn't have the synchronization with a server to be more exact this function is still being developed according to the information provided on the company website. But it might be even an advantage for those who do not have internet connection at the moment. EverNote, for example, required network connection for any search or record retrieving, which for sure makes sense from creating server dependancy point of view but not always convenient for customers. One more interesting feature worth of mentioning is a possibility to share your data, like to send a note or picture by email or post it as a Facebook or Twitter wall record.
On the whole the idea of simplicity dominates over in such apps. For instance, NotationalVelocity appis an example of simplicity: There is only one window where any text can be entered and in case such a word or a phrase already exists in a database, a prompting message pops up.
I would like to dedicate the next article to another aspect systematization and organization of information and describe some interesting and exciting programs dealing with information systematization.
