Retire To Cuenca, Ecuador

Retire To Cuenca, Ecuador

Its official Cuenca was named the number one retirement haven in the world in 2009 and Ecuador the number one country to retire to

. Wow how exciting to know we chose so well. We have lived here now for two years.

In Cuenca you not only enjoy beautiful weather, spectacular mountain views, modern conveniences and an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables your wallet will be very pleased with the prices.

Cuenca also offers great cultural activities. There always seems to be an art exhibition or a theatrical event be it orchestral music or a play. I feel you can generally find what you need to make it your life adventure here in Cuenca.

If you want to go to the coast you can fly for as little as $39 one way to Guayaquil and then catch one of the many luxury buses to Salinas, Montanita, and Manta for $5.50 per person. Stay in an affordable hosteria and enjoy the delights of the Pacific Coast.

Cuenca is now at almost 500,000 people, Cuenca is the perfect size if you are looking at living in a City but not feel overcrowded.

Because it is the provincial capital of Azuay, you have the state and municipal offices at your convenience. There are many great fine-dining restaurants, plus theater, orchestra, and plenty of festivals and celebrations to enjoy.

The colonial architecture, Andean markets, and heritage of the city make you really feel that youre really experiencing another country and a rich culture.

Public transportation is great, both within the city and between cities. The city buses are plentiful and inexpensive. Taxis are about $1.50 - $2.50, and a three hour ride to Guayaquil in a six seater new Minivan is $12. Not many expats own cars as the city is easy accessible by walking, taxi or bus. We of course have our motorcycle which allows us the freedom to venture out a little further.

Cuenca is the third largest city in Ecuador and is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. In the historical part of the city you will see many old buildings that have kept their beauty and charm.

You could be forgiven in thinking that you are in a European city such as Spain. It has four main rivers and the Tomebamba which divides the old town from the new is a delight to walk along.

Surrounding the city are the most beautiful mountains. If you are planning a visit take a little time to enjoy your surrounds.

Chao for now
