Physical Therapy Continuing Education: Are All Hamstring Injuries The Same

?

Physical Therapy Continuning Education recently interviewed a Hamstring Injury Strain expert. We asked him if all hamstring injuries were the same.

Here is what he said:

Interviewer: And you already alluded that depending on the location of the strain it could affect the recovery time and when they could expect to return to play. Could you just Physical Therapy Continuing Education: Are All Hamstring Injuries The Same?

Hamstring Injury Expert: Yeah, if it's mid-belly then we tend to see the recovery time much sooner, from three to four weeks, whereas if it's higher on the hamstring and up toward the ischial tuberosity or on the ischial tuberosity then we're looking at typically an average of anywhere from two to three months.

Interviewer: And that's your expectation to a returning to play?

Hamstring Injury Expert: Absolutely. In fact, looking back at the data unfortunately the successful rate of return to play for mid-belly injuries is actually quite good. I mean most people are able to recover from a hamstring injury. They're still prone to re-injury and that's the part that we address a lot in our research is how can we minimize that risk of re-injury.

But in particular the high hamstring tendinopathy injuries where it's right off the ischial tuberosity, there is a good percentage of those athletes that simply can't return to sport. The pain really doesn't resolve enough and it prevents them from performing at a high enough level that they ultimately tend to either change sports or just stop playing all together.

Interviewer: Right. And you just alluded to my next question; there often does seem to be for some people a high rate of reoccurrence with hamstring injuries. Do we have any data or do you know of any data that shows roughly what that rate of reoccurrence is and why is the hamstring so susceptible to recurrent strains?

Hamstring Injury Expert: The general number that's thrown around is one out of every three hamstring injuries will recur usually within the first two weeks of return to sport but certainly within that first year of going back to sport. And again, that varies depending on how they progress through the rehab, what sort of rehab is used, the numbers will shift anywhere from I've seen them as low as five, six, seven percent. Some have been upwards as high as 60 percent even.
