Perfume World
The bottles modern perfume comes in is thanks to the Egyptians who first manufactured glass and perfume bottles quickly followed.
Even way back in 7000 bc, people were using olive oils mixed with fragrant plants to produce nice smelling skin ointments.
However, it was the growing spread of Islam that truly embraced and expanded the fragrance market. By the sixth century and with no boundaries of race, religion or language, bottled fragrances had become a major component of the huge trade to the western world. But it was the French who took perfume to the next level in the 19th century. They marketed the modern day concept of bliss, ecstasy, desire and love being all achievable with perfume. It became widely used by higher society for its therapeutic and courting enticement properties. French manufacturers experimented with all types of ingredients in their quest to develop even more exotic fragrances. Some of which even included urine and sweat, but more commonly from resins, oils and herb extracts.
These days there are well over thirty thousand different perfume products on the market and the sole use of fragrant flowers and natural spices has long been replaced with synthesized laboratory produced fragrance mixtures. The base of perfumes is normally alcohol and the strength of the perfume is dictated by the amount of alcohol liquid used. While Eau de Parfum (EDP) contains anything up to 15% pure perfume, Eau de Toilette (EDT) has a much lower percentage of perfume to alcohol, anything from 1 to 5% perfume only.
Hence the price difference between EDP and EDT. While EDP is ideal for a heavier long lasting effect and used sparingly, EDT is lighter and used more as a body splash to invigorate. Especially by men who need splash on face lotion after shaving.
With the emergence of celebrity perfumes a whole new area of perfumes and fragrances has emerged. Just about every celeb has released their own brand of perfume. The uniqueness to an individual is why there are so many fragrances, as what may smell hot on Kylie may smell not so hot on you. This is due to a naturally occurring reaction between chemicals in our skin and the perfume. Hence why there are so many different perfumes.
Its not just the ladies that are into perfumes. Over the past decades, it has become increasingly popular with men. Long gone are the days of Brute or Stratus, now its expensive and exotic for the man and the annual spend is fast catching up with that of women.
Just a few tips in getting the best from your perfume.
As each perfume has its own unique affect on your mood and feeling, use different ones to reflect the mood you like to enhance.
Apart from your body, adding a drop of your favourite perfume to a hand wash of underwear keeps it and you smelling fresh and vibrant. Whether your skin is oily or dry makes quite a difference as perfume smells stronger on oily skin, so less is needed. Good news for oily people though, you spend less on perfume. Oh and don't go wearing strong EDP fragrances in hot or humid weather, wear something lighter like EDT. Keep the good stuff for colder dryer days and nights. And if you want your perfume to keep its qualities to the end, then always keep the bottle in a cool dark place, preferably a cupboard or drawer. Never near a window as sunlight will destroy it. Once you have opened the perfume, use it within a few months as its fragrance will change as chemicals within the perfume start breaking down.
The best place to apply the stronger EDP types, is behind the ears and on the wrists. Why you may ask? Apparently its to do with being near major pulse points of the body. Possibly as where there is a large pulse there is more skin movement as the vein pulses beneath it, thus opening the skins pores slightly to allow tiny molecules of the fragrance to be expelled into the air.
