PC World Review

Not sure where to get that new Desktop PC or Laptop PC? Not sure where to get it from? Online or from a store?

PC World are one of the UK's biggest chains of computer stores which have recently started opening up megastores combining PC World and Curry's.

PC World first opened in November 1991 with a store in Croydon but Dixons took the company over in 1993 which at that time there where only 4 stores in the UK which started the massive growth of stores opening all over the country which stands at about 170 stores to date including stores in Ireland, Italy, Spain and Sweden.

PC World offer a wide range of Desktop PCs, Laptops and a huge selection of peripherals including DSG stores' own brand Advent and PC Line. The stores also boast a PC Clinic' which will diagnose and fix any problems as well as do any upgrades you wish to get and give advice. Most UK stores now have a branch called The Tech Guys' which give advice to business customers. From 2006 PC World launched The Connected House' which sells PC based home entertainment systems and installation services.

In 2007 PC World announced that it was going to start selling Dell PCs in store as Dell was trying to get out to a wider market who also sells their XPS systems in HMV stores across the UK.

Today PC World has rivals but mainly online as we are in the age where nearly 80% of the population regularly buy online, no-one can beat the fact that PC World is the largest dominating store for computer related products on the high street. Although they have has some bad press over the years over claims like:

Not honouring statuary responsibilities under the sale of goods act.

Promoting goods with incorrect or misleading information.

Customers have to pay up to 1 a minute telephone support for hardware issues unless they have paid for an extended warranty.

Overcharging customers for repairs and a lack of knowledge among technicians in seven random stores.

Differences in pricing between PC World Stores, online and other shops owned by the Dixons group.

Although in 2006 they abolished paying their staff commission for sales they made which led to staff trying to get a fast and more expensive sale and adopted a bonus incentive for customer satisfaction which was measured weekly by a mystery shopper and exit surveys. Although recent studies still show some of the above still happening today you don't have to look far to see some of the mixed views shown by the average customer, it is convenient which is probably one of the reasons it survives, not everyone wants to wait to get an ink cartridge delivered when they can just pop into the shop.

If they want to satisfy the majority of their potential customers they really should read the reviews of their current ones.
