Online English Degree Offers Reprieve
Share: It's in the headlines all the time, it's the topic of talks on lunch breaks amongst
teachers and administrators and unfortunately, most students are a little concerned about it as well. The topic? Education budget cuts at the state and the federal level. It seems as if in a time of economic crisis, the liberal arts, music and elective programs get the first cut. With President Obama and the rest of the US concentrated on getting more students to compete at the international level for math and science, it seems as if the humanities are getting put on the back burner. It's a worrying sign to those that want a degree in English, or philosophy, for example. Yet as the times change, technology is changing with them, and more people are turning to an online English degree in the face of these cuts.
Many universities in the US and even across the seas in England have seen the beginnings of a "phase out" of certain departments, many of them in the English departments or related areas. With these cuts come more professors unable to get on the tenure track, or out of a job completely. Fewer students who would like to earn a masters or PhD in a humanities area are getting accepted to humanities programs. For example, the State University of New York (SUNY) Albany announced in October that they were forced to begin phasing out at least five departments over the course of two years: theatre, Classics, French, Russian, and Italian. The reasons were that they had lost over $33 million in funding and about $12 million more was expected to be lost. At the University of Iowa, half of the cuts affected the humanities, including German, film studies, comparative literature and American studies. In England, a group of schools that are collectively known at the University of the Arts saw an overall budget cut of 35 percent. It may be that some in the upper-echelon of government see certain studies as "self-indulgent" or unnecessary in the competitive global market. Yet, teachers and students would argue, an education in the humanities equates a more civilized and learned populace that values lessons learned in these departments as foundation stones of society.
However, it can't be ignored that technology and online learning are starting to become the new norm, even in elementary classrooms. The explosion and growth of online education is a testament to this fact. More people than ever are finding out that they don't have to come from privileged families to go to college, or that a busy life will leave no room for an advanced degree. In the face of budget cuts to colleges and universities alike in the humanities departments, more people than ever before are finding the value of an online English degree or other related humanities education.
