Mounting Your Motorcycle Tires

Mounting Your Motorcycle Tires

Save a few bucks by learning how to mount and balance your new tires

. With some care, patience and right tools you can change a set of tires in a few hours. Some special tools are needed for the task but you should consider the cost of the tools as money saved in the long run. The task itself is not that technically difficult, but appropriate caution should be taken and be sure to wear safety glasses at all times.

Mounting a tire depends on how much time you have, if you have money to buy tools and moreover how hard you want to work at it. It involves simple steps almost like mounting a car or bicycle tire. Take off the old tire and put on the new tire. Balance the assembly so it does not cause vibration when you are at speed. But if you cannot do it yourself, then pay someone to mount and balance your new tires. Some manufactures do offer such services including manufacturers like Pirelli Motorcycle tires offer services.

Have a working area with enough room to move around and space to bolt a tire-changing stand to the floor. Get all the tools and materials required ready before you start to remove the bike tire. Some basic tools needed when changing the tires include tire irons, safety glasses, tire valve core tool, pencil, spray-on silicone lubricant, breezer tire tool, an air pressure gauge, bead breaker and compressed air pump.

Put the bike on a stand to lift the wheel off the ground. Allow the air inside the motorcycle tire to escape using valve core tool. It is either snapped on or screwed into the valve to keep it open. Hold the valve core tool tightly since the pressure on the air coming out is normally strong. You can also choose to unscrew the core from the wheels valve stem with a Schrader wrench to deflate the tire.

Draw an arrow at the edge of the rim using a pencil; this helps you to see the direction of the spin of the wheel. Detach the inner edge of the tire from the rim using the bead breaker tool. This can be done by slipping two tire irons between the tire and upper rim (one at the 10 oclock position and another at 2 oclock. Hook tire irons curved tip against the upper rim then push them towards the center of the wheel to stretch part of the tire over the upper rim. Continue to separate the tire from all edges of the rim on both sides.

Place the new tire over the wheel, matching the tires rotational direction arrow in the same rotational direction as the wheel. Slide as much of the bottom of the new tire over the wheels upper rim. Push the tire down to seat the remaining portion of the motorcycle tire onto the wheel. Shove the tire iron away from the wheel to lever the tire over the rim. Do the same around the wheel until the entire top half of the tire is seated on the wheel.

Screw the valve core into the wheels valve stem using the Schrader wrench. Inflate the tire to the correct tire pressure using compressed air. You are then set to go.
