Motovun is a small town located in the central part of peninsula of Istra in Croatia. The town is famous for its Motovun Film Festival. The festival was established in 1999. It is held once a year and it usually runs for five days in the late July or early August. This year, Motovun Film Festival runs from July 25 till July 29. The festival discovers the most exciting cinema movies which the world has to offer. There are plenty of innovative and inspirational works which were made by beginners or masters of the film industry.
Projections are held in continuous sequence and they keep running from 10 am to 4 pm during the festival. Daily projections are held inside the cinema and the night projections are held in the open air, under a starry heaven. Old cinema was reconstructed for the festival needs.

Share: The festival is very popular with young people, especially students. During the festival, students can find accommodation in the camp which is organized on the foothills of Motovun.
The festival is entirely dedicated to movies made in small cinematographies or independent productions. Festival shows different movies, from documentaries to feature films, from short to long movies, from guerilla made movies to co-productions. The movies are from all over the world. The selection criteria are mostly connected with the fact that they have to fit in the open-minded atmosphere of the festival with their innovations.
There are usually about 40 000 audience members in the town during the festival. There is no red carpet or glamour. Required clothing is shorts and required food is popcorn.
The festival was conceived as a non competitive festival at the beginning. Today, there are 5 awards on the festival. The Propeller is the main award of the festival. Bauer Award is the award for the best movie which was made in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Slovenia or Serbia. Corruption free award is the award for films that raise social awareness. Motovun Online is the award for the best movie up to 15 minute long. There is also the Fipresci award.
Organizers have announced the fourteenth edition of the festival, although it is actually the thirteenth edition of the festival. The idea of skipping the thirteenth edition of the festival was created as a joke and immediately was unanimously accepted, although the organizers aren't afraid of number thirteen.
This year, the country partner will be Ireland. Irish film industry will be presented to the Croatian audience with the finest feature, documentaries, short and experimental films made in the past 5 years.
