They were invented, according to historians, in the fourteenth century as work wear for people who worked in the fields, farmers and peasants. Since men and women worked in the fields side by side the shoes were made to be unisex.
The proof of this fact is that in the Catalonia region of Spain to this day there are shops making traditional espadrilles in the old fashioned way and selling them just like they have been for more than a hundred years. You will see that they have styles of these shoes that are appropriate for either sex and some that can be worn by both men and women.
Now that it is clear that mens espadrilles are as legitimate and as acceptable as women's espadrilles, lets get down to the basics of what really makes a shoe an authentic espadrille. Espadrilles are shoes traditionally made with rope soles that have been braided and shaped into the form of a sole with a cotton fabric or a canvas upper that is sewed into the sole. Originally the rope of the sole was made out of a hardy breed of grass endemic to the area where the shoes were invented.
The grass was called Esparto and these shoes are still made out of this grass in Spain till today. Most espadrilles that you ever see though are made with rope soles that are made out of jute and originate from the south Asian country of Bangladesh in the Indian subcontinent. Bangladesh is one of the world's largest if not the largest producer of jute and is also the largest producer of women's and mens espadrilles.
There are other versions of espadrilles that are less authentic as well. For instance, rubber soles or synthetic soles that are styled to look like rope but these are not really espadrilles in the true sense of the word.
