Being the longest river in all of England with its impressive 346km length the Thames begins its journey from Thames Head in Gloucestershire and flows in to the ocean at the Thames Estuary. Fed by more than 20 tributary streams, a record 80 islands also float along its lucid course while the river also supports a wide variety of wildlife that co-exist along its folds and fringes. Having been a focal point in Britains international trading capabilities over the centuries the Port Of London is also encapsulated within the timeless river owing to its advantageous position along the trade route.
Owing to the diverse ecological landscapes that exist within its reaches, the Thames is also home to a vibrant collection of bird species ranging from herring gulls, cormorants, blacks and swans. Mandarin ducks, wood ducks and Egyptian geese are also frequently spotted in addition to water birds the likes of kingfishers, great crested grebes, moorhens and coots. As a river that contains both seawater and freshwater sources, fish species that inhabit the Thames and its enclaves include flounders, trout, barbels, pikes and chubs while schools of short-snouted seahorse have also been found in recent years.
Dubbed the rowing headquarters of Britain, several major rowing competitions are conducted on the river each year as the Thamess prolific rowing repertoire includes more than 200 clubs based on the river. These include the Henley Royal Regatta and the historic University Boat Race which sees rowers from the Oxford University Boat Club and Cambridge University Boat Club race to the finish line in a contest like no other. Sailing is another popular sport that is practiced within the non-tidal and tidal stretches along the Thames while skiffing matches also take place during the summer months.
