Live Rich (on A Poor Budget)
When I take a step back to look at the lifestyle my spouse and I lead
, I realize that it makes us appear to be much more financially fortunate than we actually are. Is it because we are irresponsible and have maxed out several credit cards just to keep up with the Joneses?
No, quite the contrary: we are very careful about how we spend the money we earn. We have simply developed a few strategies to help us make the most of everything we have, allowing us to indulge ourselves in a few regular luxuries. How? Let me tell you!
I am a real food connoisseur, so naturally, I love to eat out. But instead of dining out at a middle-range restaurant every weekend for our date night, my husband and I opt for simplistic, inexpensive dates (visiting the nearby dollar theatre or stargazing in the woods, for example) for three weekends out of a month and reserve the last for sampling local upscale restaurants.
This way, we have a particularly fancy night out to look forward to, and we aren't straying from the budget we have formulated for the month. Part of the fun of doing this also comes from the new culinary experience, which encourages us to imitate our favorite dishes in our own kitchen, giving us a taste of the luxury at our own dining table.
Want designer clothes? No problem. Use your favorite search engine to find consignment stores in your area, which often specialize in high-end brands. And don't be afraid that you will only find last season's trends there. People discard clothing for countless reasons, so it doesn't hurt to take a peek. I found a brand new button-down shirt from a popular high-end brand for my spouse at 14 dollars. It would normally sell for close to 90 dollars at mainstream retail locations.
Be sure to also keep your eyes peeled for major sales and clearance events. As long as you know how and when to shop, you will never have to pay full price for a piece of clothing again. In fact, I haven't spent more than 30 dollars on a pair of jeans in ages--and I always buy name brand!
"Good things come to those who wait," goes the old saying, and it's true. When you see that dress in the store window that you are dying to have or that new electronic equipment that would be so much fun, start a separate savings fund for it. If you're married or are otherwise sharing finances with someone, then talk it over with them so you can designate a certain amount to put away each day. By the time you reach your goal, the item may even be on sale!
These are just a few tips I can give you. Keep your ears open for more advice on how to live the high life on a low budget. Trust me, being frugal is as fun as you make it.
