Knowing When To Purchase From Online Auctions

Knowing When To Purchase From Online Auctions

There are many reasons you may turn to online auctions to purchase various necessities and wants

. However, these auctions systems have been infiltrated by fraudsters who are hoping to steal your money.

They will entice your to bid and pay, but never deliver the item. As a result, it is vitally important that you take precautions to avoid loss.

For this reason, there are really only two reasons you should ever purchase an item on an online auction and chance the risk involved. The first reason is that this item is rarely on sale and it is very unlikely that you will see it anywhere else.

In addition to the item being rare, it should also be unopened or in very good condition. However, as the seller could be lying about the condition, you will want to check his or her reputation by reading the feedback on his or her previous transactions.

If the feedback is highly positive, then you can consider purchasing the item with a fair amount of trust in the seller. Try to look for sellers who have a long history of reputable transactions with 95% positive feedback.

The second reason you may want to purchase an item from an online auction is because you need to save money and the item is offered for a much lower price, including shipping, than a local store. You may want to consider setting a specific amount you must save by purchasing online rather than from a store.

For example, you may decide only to bid if you will save at least 25% on the final price of the item, which include shipping. Otherwise, the risk is not worth it and you will go to the store to purchase the item.

Again, you should check to make sure that the reputation of the seller is excellent. If the seller says the item is selling "as is" or with "no returns," do not purchase the item.

It is likely that the item is broken or damaged. A good policy to adopt is that the item described on the site is several levels above the actual item you will receive in condition.

These two reasons are the only reasons you should consider purchasing through an online auction. However, there are many reasons you should not purchase from an online seller.

One time when you should not purchase from an online auctioneer is when the item does not fall into your rule of saving a certain amount through the online purchase rather than purchasing it from a store. While the offer may still be tempting, it will not be the worth the risk that could be avoided by purchasing from a reliable store.

Another reason you will want to make your purchase offline is if you do not really need it. Sometimes the time limits on auctions can get really exciting and you may want to jump into the bidding without really thinking about whether you need the item or not.

This is especially the case if you needed the item yesterday and did not have it. Although you needed it yesterday, you may not need it today or in the foreseeable future.

Yet, as you were missing the item once, you will be tempted to bid on the item. However, this is one instance where you should definitely not bid on the item.

Another time when you should not bid on an item is if you need it, but you cannot wait for it to be shipped and arrive at your house. If this is the case, it will be worth it to have it on time and purchase it from a reliable retailer at a more expensive price.

When you are reviewing the information about the seller, you will want to check to see where he or she is from. If the seller is not from the United States, you may want to pass on bidding.

Often transactions with foreign entities through these sites go wrong. The risk for this kind of transaction is much higher.

In addition, if the seller does not have a very long history and the item costs more than $25, you probably do not want to take the risk. If the seller does have a great rating and the item is less than $25 you can take the risk.

After all, $25 is not too big of a loss. However, you will not want to risk a lot of money on new sellers.
