While greenhouse gas emissions are not so much of a hot issue as they were, smart energy management and overall sustainability are the much discussed topics in the boardroom.We probably won't see any consensus when it comes to global energy management while the major nations are so far apart on restrictions and procedures. We know that some of the oil-producing countries have no interest in restricting fuel production at all, but countries are nevertheless likely to push limits on companies and consumers in general through regulation.While governments may not concur on global energy management and have not yet issued widespread directives to consumers, cost and resource savings alone should be a significant reason for businesses to start examining their energy usage. The organization that is able to fully comprehend their energy footprint and proactively take steps to conserve will be at a competitive advantage over their peers.The definition of energy footprint and associated liabilities must be the first step. Energy supplied and consumed can not be controlled without proper understanding of equipment efficiency. Monitoring equipment leads naturally to better management and when this is done in real-time, the elusive goal of pure efficiency is that much closer.Organizations shouldn't wait for governmental legislation to start looking at their energy consumption. Instead, they should look at ways to reduce energy usage simply from a cost perspective. There is surely sufficient incentive to try and drive energy-related costs down as far as possible in the pursuit of true operational efficiency.
