Is It A Good Idea To Avoid The Dentist?
Many people are afraid of going to the dentist
. Whether it is because of a bad experience or the perceived high cost, most people simply do not view the dentist as an enjoyable experience. This leads many patients to avoiding regular checkups, frequently to the disadvantage of their oral health.
Failure to get regular checkups can lead to a number of oral problems. Irregular cleanings can lead to cavities, gum disease, and even tooth loss. However, many patients are aware of this and still choose to avoid the dentist's office. One main reason is because many folks are afraid that a regular cleaning will be painful, or that they will need a painful procedure.
Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry has evolved and advanced in recent years. Cleanings and routine procedures are no longer painful and fearful patients are always treated extremely gently. Most dentists realize that their office makes a lot of patients anxious and work very hard to make each patient feel comfortable.
Another reason that some people avoid the dentist is because they are afraid of the high costs. Visiting the dentist does not have to be expensive for uninsured patients. Many offices are willing to estimate the price of a visit for an uninsured patient, which allows potential patients to shop around for the best deal. Many patients would be surprised that a simple cleaning is much less expensive than they may think.
Other patients simply do not think that they can make time for the dentist. Fortunately, as cosmetic dentistry advances, procedures take less and less time. Even patients that live far from the closest dentist or that lead a very busy life, can fit a quick cleaning into their schedule.
Even if it is costly or inconvenient to make it to the dentist, patients should be aware of how important it is to their oral health. Waiting to visit a dentist's office until a patient notices a cavity or begins to experience tooth decay will be much more expensive than regularly scheduling cleanings. Additionally, a severe cavity or other condition will be exponentially more painful than taking regular care of the teeth.
Great oral health depends on consistent upkeep. Folks need to brush their teeth on a twice daily basis, as well as floss and use a plaque and bacteria killing rinse or mouthwash. This, along with regular dentist visits, will keep the teeth healthy and attractive. Good oral habits need to begin before a patient begins to have trouble with their teeth, as proactive care is the easiest and least costly. While many patients may want to avoid the dentist, these same patients would soon realize just how quick and painless these visits are, simply by giving them a chance.
